Allow Teens to Claim Their Personal Space as Their Own:

Remember, you want your teen to have a little privacy, but not too much… The teenage years are probably the most difficult time of childhood. During this time, children struggle to discover their self identity as they are growing into adults. Typically, boundaries are stretched and rules are tested as the teen starts taking those first steps into adulthood. So it’s no shock that next to the terrible two’s, the teenager years are the most dreaded by parents. However, it is important to remember that these fragile youth are at a critical point in their lives. Teens find themselves not only facing emotional transitions, but physical changes as well. Parents must ensure that their child’s growth occurs in a safe, supportive environment. So while your teen will want to have privacy from you, it’s important to have rules that keep him or her on track. Your teen needs to recognize what is and isn’t acceptable and what the consequences of misbehavior are. Warm and positive communication without underestimating your teen is the key to successful relationship between the two of you. Regard your teen as the maturing person they are, and try to understand their opinion whenever you discuss something. This shows that you pay attention and consider him or her important. It won’t happen all at once, but with mutual understanding, you can enjoy your time being a parent of a teenager.
