The Bald Eagle is well-known as a symbol of freedom in the United States of America. The American Bald Eagle is the only eagle which is native to North America, and it is only on this continent that one may find it. They receive the name “bald” from their head and tail feathers which turn white as they mature. To see a mature Bald Eagle up close is awe-inspiring, and to see one in flight is an experience to cherish for a lifetime.
The Bald Eagle was unofficially chosen as a National Symbol in 1872, when the Constitution of the United States was ratified but was not officially nominated as such until 1788. Benjamin Franklin, however, thought that the turkey should be the National Bird because he believed it better symbolized the clean, honest, and more straightforward ideals of the American people. His bid was lost after a heated debate and the Bald Eagle was officially adopted as the “First Bird” in 1789 when George Washington became the first President of the USA.
